Silke Gorldt (1976-2002)

Silke always had a smile on her face. She was a down to earth girl, she was a joy to be with and, in her own words, "just wanted to fun". She was a wonderful person and a fanatic kiteboarder. I was looking forward to see her again for Cabarete's 2002 Kiteboard event. I spent many hours talking to her while she was here in Cabarete on earlier visits. I just found out this morning about her tragic death. I'm still under shock while I'm writing this. I went back to pictures I took during last year's competition and found a few of Silke. They show very much how she really was - always with a smile, that was Silke, a warm sunshine in life for everybody that knew her.

My deep sympathy to her family, friends and kitesurfers around the world. It's a tragic loss for all of us.

Since this tragic event happened the family of Slike have set up a foundation in the name and spirit of Silke. The foundation helps victims of kiting accidents and their relatives and put a lot of effort into various safety issues. If you'd like to help out you can donate money to the Foundation.
